Samuel Dana Greene served as USS Monitor's only executive officer, assuming command after Captain Worden was wounded in the engagement at Hampton Roads with CSS Merrimac on March 9, 1862. Between 1866 and 1884, he served in various capacities at the U.S. Naval Academy.
